Lothar Thoms gewann in Moskau olympisches Gold im 1000 m Zeitfahren und stellte gleichzeitig einen neuen Weltrekord auf. Das nach vorn abfallende Oberrohr verk\u00fcrzt das Steuerrohr, bringt den Fahrer in eine aggressivere Position und senkt somit den Windwiderstand. Dieser Typ Zeitfahrrad wurde bis etwa 1986 gebaut. 1997 verabschiedete die UCI Regeln, nach denen beide Laufr\u00e4der gleich gro\u00df sein mussten und nur noch Rennb\u00fcgel verwendet werden durften. Rennmaschinen war schon immer oberste Priorit\u00e4t. Dabei musste Aerodynamik mit Stabilit\u00e4t vereinigt werden. Dem geschwungenen Oberrohr wurde jedoch eine geringe Steifigkeit nachgesagt, woraufhin Irio Tommasini einen Rahmen im \u201eTriple Triangle\u201c-Design baute. Dieser verband die Sattelstreben nicht mit der Sattelmuffe, sondern gleich mit Sattelhohr und Oberrohr. Damit erh\u00f6hte er die Steifigkeit und seine Rahmen fanden mit der bulgarischen Nationalmannschaft einen prominenten Abnehmer.
